The life record of Halvor Hansen indicates what may be accomplished by the man of foreign birth who is ambitious and desires to win in the business world. A native of Norway, he was born in Solør on the 8th of February, 1845, and there spent the first twenty-four years of his life. In 1869 he emigrated to the United States and on the 1st of June arrived in Austin, Minnesota. The following day, however, he crossed the boundary into Otranto township, Mitchell county, where he has since lived. For a year he was in the employ of Thor Thompson as a farm hand, but ambitious to engage in farming on his own account, he then secured land and has since given his attention to general agricultural pursuits. For many years he was very active in the care and management of his property, but is now largely leaving the cultivation of his land to his son-in-law, Oscar Thompson.

In 1873 Mr. Hansen was united in marriage to Miss Anne Thompson, a daughter of Thor Thompson, and they became the parents of nine children: Torvel, deceased; Martha, the wife of Robert Richard, of Minnesota; Bertha, who died in infancy; George, living in Montana; Ella, at home; Hannah, the wife of Oscar Thompson, residing upon the home place; Bertha, the wife of Ed Sherman, who is living at Wibaux, Montana; Henry B., who is also located at Wibaux, Montana; and Tina A., who died in childhood.

Mr. Hansen takes an active and helpful interest in the Norwegian Lutheran church. For many years he served as one of the trustees of St. Ansgar church and he does everything in his power to promote its growth and extend its influence. He is a director of the schools, in which capacity he has served for many years, and he has also been road supervisor. He does not vote with any particular party but gives his allegiance to those measures which he believes to be of the greatest benefit to the community, and is ever fearless in supporting his honest convictions in regard to public affairs. Mitchell county numbers him among its worthy citizens, and as a business man his record is creditable, showing what can be accomplished when there is a will to dare and to do.
