George A. Stoughton is one of the representative and progressive business men of Osage, where he is engaged in the manufacture of interior finish sash and doors. He was born four miles east of Osage, upon the farm of his father, his natal day being November 11, 1858. Mention of his parents is made elsewhere in this work in connection with the sketch of H. L. Stoughton.

Reared and educated in Mitchell county, Mr. Stoughton of this review had the usual experiences of the farm bred boy, and when still quite young he spent eight years on the west coast of California, being engaged in ranching and contracting at Santa Ana, in Orange county. At length, however, he decided in favor of the middle west in preference to the Pacific coast and he returned to Iowa, taking up his abode at Osage. Here he turned his attention to building and architectural work, in which he was engaged until about 1904, when he joined Otto Bilharz and Wilber Brush in incorporating the Osage Manufacturing Company, which continued thus in existence until 1915, when Mr. Stoughton purchased the interests of his partners in the undertaking, thus becoming sole proprietor. He is still conducting the business and is now extensively and successfully engaged in the manufacture of interior finish sash, doors and kindred lines. The excellence of the product, the reliability of his business methods, his earnest desire to please his patrons and his indefatigable energy have been the salient features in his success, making his enterprise one of the profitable productive industries of Mitchell county.

Mr. Stoughton was married in Osage to Miss Mattie A. Brown Who was born in Vermont but came to Osage in early life. She enjoyed excellent educational advantages and made good use of her knowledge and ability by teaching school in Mitchell county for seven years, while for four years she was an instructor in the schools of Osage. Mr. and Mrs. Stoughton have one son, Galen M., who is an engineer by profession and is now in the service of the United States, having joined the engineers' corps.

In politics Mr. Stoughton has long been a stalwart republican but has not been an office seeker, preferring to render his public service as a private citizen, and centering his attention upon his business affairs. He is widely known in the county in which the greater part of his life has been passed and his many substantial traits of character have gained him warm friendship and high regard.
