Kaldenberg, Joe 1938-2009

Joe Junior Kaldenberg was born on March 21, 1938, near Galesburg, Iowa. He was the second of six children that were born to Joe and Jeannetta Van Ringelestein Kaldenberg.

Joe received his grade school education at the Sully Christian Grade School and graduated from Sully High School in Sully, Iowa.

Following his graduation Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army Reserves and served until his medical discharge.

Joe’s father operated a general store at Reasnor, Iowa at the same time he farmed near Galesburg and Joe, Jr. assisted his father in the operations. He later began working for his Uncle Dewey Kaldenberg as a well driller at Slater, Iowa.

On March 2, 1962, he was united in marriage Karen Diane Van Waardhuizen, a daughter of Milton A. and Esther Wichhart Van Waardhuizen. Joe and Karen relocated to Pella, Iowa where they raised their two children: Jodi Diane and Eric Todd.

Joe drove truck for Scheibout Tire Company and then returned to farming for a short while. He became an insurance agent for Bankers Life Nebraska. Joe’s association with the now Ameritas Investment Corporation spanned 40 years. He earned the following honors: Masters Club, Sower Club and Sower Round Table Presidents Club and attained the status of: CLU, ChFC and LUTCF during this time. He was also associated with Broker’s Clearing House. Joe never did completely retire but always found time for family and friends.

He also found much enjoyment in lawn mowing and raising flowers.

On Wednesday evening, July 15, 2009, he passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella at the age of 71 years,3 months and 24 days.

Joe is survived by his wife, Karen; a daughter, Jodi Rau and her husband, Brice, of Marshalltown, Iowa; a son, Eric Kaldenberg, of Phoenix, Arizona; and five grandchildren: Brandon, Mara, Lilly, Lyndi and Lexia. Joe leaves three brothers and their wives: Robert A. and Phyllis Kaldenberg of Winterset, Iowa, Gene E. and Helen Kaldenberg, Tommy L. and Patricia Kaldenberg of Reasnor, Iowa; the following sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Loretta (Van Waardhuizen) and Larry Jabaai of Indianapolis, Indiana, Connie (John) Van Waardhuizen of Pella, Frances (Charles) Van Waardhuizen of Farmington, Missouri; along with the following step-sisters-in-law and step-brothers-in-law: Joyce (Jansen) Kooistra of Sully, Iowa, Roger and Jeanette Jansen, Ed and Carol Jansen of Pella, Duane Jansen of Golden, Colorado, Beverly(Jansen) and Jim Tierney of Carroll, Iowa, Bryce and Chris Jansen of Stigler, Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Jeannetta Kaldenberg; his oldest brother, John W. Kaldenberg, who was killed in an auto accident in 1955; his youngest sister, Veronica, who died in infancy in 1953; his parents-in-law, Milton and Esther Van Waardhuizen; his step-father-in-law, Jake Jansen; two brothers-in-law: John W. Van Waardhuizen and Charles W. Van Waardhuizen; a step-brother-in-law, Larry Kooistra, and a step-sister-in-law, Karen (Duane) Jansen; two nieces: Michele Van Waardhuizen and Leslie Jabaai; and a nephew, Aaron Van Waardhuizen.

Joe was a faithful member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa.
