Mehls, Delores A. (Ver Meer) 1942-2009

Delores Ann Ver Meer was born on July 24, 1942, at home in Marion County, Iowa. She was the second of four children that were born to Anthony John and Walterena Vander Beek Ver Meer.

Delores attended the Pella Public Schools and when she was 9 years of age her father passed away. She graduated from Pella High School with the Class of 1960.

On January 6, 1960, she was united in marriage with Wayne Cade, whom she had met while working at the Central Park Cafe in Pella, Iowa, and to this union a son, Curtis Lee, was born. Wayne died on February 24, 1962.

On June 7, 1963, she was united in marriage with Dale Lyn Kane at Trenton, Missouri. To this union two children were born: Brenda Sue and Joel Lyn. Delores and Dale lived around Pella all their married life.

Delores worked in the cooking field at various facilities including Hilltop Manor, Pella Community Hospital, Strawtown Inn and the Pella Golf & Country Club all her life. Not only was she a talented cook, who made the best Dutchmess, but she enjoyed being with people. She was a very social person and enjoyed visiting and having company.

Her husband, Dale, passed on March 2, 1994, at the age of just 53 years following a 7 month illness with cancer.

On August 1, 2000, she was united in marriage with Charles Mehls. Delores and Charles spent their lives together living at 1062 Highway T17 near Pella. Delores continued collecting Delft, scrapbooking and enjoying playing cards. She was very competitive!

On June 1, 2009, Delores was diagnosed with a peritrachial mass and passed away 12 days later, June 12, 2009, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 66 years.

Those who will cherish her memory are her husband, Charles; their five children and their families: Curtis Kane of Pella, Iowa; Brenda and Douglas Hoksbergen of Montezuma, Iowa; Joe Kane and his special friend, DeAnn Martin of Ankeny, Iowa; Carlene (Mehls) and Kelly Colleman of Perry, Iowa; Ken and Julie Mehls of Johnston, Iowa.

Delores leaves a special niece, Gayley Ver Meer, who was raised like a daughter, and her friend, Lola, of Ottumwa, Iowa; her brother, Donald John (Doc) Ver Meer and Teresa of Pella; her sister, Linda Kay and her husband, Willis Roose, of Pella; along with the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Barry and Connie Kane, Janice (Kane) and Bob Buyert, Max and Joyce Kane all of Pella, Mary (Kane) and Harry Braafhart of Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Delores was preceded in death by her husbands, Wayne Cade and Dale Kane; her father, Anthony Ver Meer, who died on November 15, 1951, at the age of just 40 years and her mother, Walterena Ver Meer, who died on February 18, 2001, at the age of 84 years; an infant brother, Kenneth John Ver Meer, who died in a tragic auto accident on September 1, 1951, at the age of just 14 months; and parents-in-law, Dale and Ina Roush Kane.

Delores was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, and an aunt who loved unconditionally. To all she would lend a listening ear.
