LaVerne was born in Dallas, Iowa on September 2, 1925 to Donald and Esther Hansaker.

He moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming to work for the Union Pacific Railroad and then served in the United States Navy during WWII.

After returning from the Navy, he was united in marriage to Doris Horst in 1946, they were blessed with two daughters: Sandra and Patricia. They returned to Dallas in 1953, where LaVerne worked for the Dallas School System until he went to work in Des Moines for Dico in refrigeration/electrical repair engineering for 30 years. His grandfather, Pal, who he admired very much, taught him this trade.

LaVerne is described as a quiet, thoughtful, and wonderful man. He was self taught and could learn to do anything that needed done. LaVerne had a way with animals, the horses, dogs, geese, and in later years even the cats.

LaVerne passed away October 7, 2008 in Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife Doris; mother Esther Hansaker; daughters: Sandy (Rodney) Johnson, and Pat (Jerry) Cieslak; grandchildren: Tim (Julie) Johnson, Jon (Marsha) Johnson, Jason Cieslak, Darla Lovell, and Wendy (Andy) Chiabotta; 7 great grandchildren: Chelsey, Shelby, Kassidy, Lily, Pierce, Cael, and Reece; a great great grandson, Hayden; and siblings: Marilyn Farrell, Norma Wadle, Orbie Becker, Jake Hansaker, Pete Hansaker, and LeRoy Hansaker.
