Howe, Nellie (Doty) 1928-2009

Nellie Roff-Howe was born June 11, 1928 in Richland, Missouri the daughter of Walter Doty and Hannah Lucinda (Davisson) Doty.

She was raised primarily in the Swan and Knoxville areas. During the war, Nellie went to work in the chicken factory in Knoxville.

On February 15, 1947 she was united in marriage to Robert Lee Roff in Knoxville. To this union five children were born: Barbara, Cindy, Robert, Jr., Rodney and David. The couple raised their family on a farm east of Pleasantville. Nellie and Bob sold their farm in 1973 and moved to Missouri, where they raised cattle and ran a country store.

In 1990 they moved back to Knoxville. Nellie worked as a nurse’s aid for several years for West Ridge in Knoxville and St. Joseph’s in Centerville.

Bob passed away in 1998 and on July 10, 2004 Nellie was united in marriage to Paul Howe. They made their home in Elmer, Missouri. Paul died in April of 2006 and Nellie returned to Knoxville three months ago.

In her spare time, Nellie loved dancing, traveling and playing cards-especially Rook. She loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

Nellie passed away on Friday, May 29, 2009 at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehab Center at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 18 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands and 5 siblings.

Those left to honor her memory include her children: Barbara Worthington (Jim), Rodney Roff (Anita), and David Roff all of Knoxville; Robert Roff, Jr.(Theresa) of Birmingham, Iowa and Cindy Jackson (Jamie) of Glenwood, Missouri; step-son, Mike Howe (Debbie) of St. Louis, Missouri; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; siblings, Dakota Hansen and Alice Walker both of Pleasantville, Louis Doty of Cosmo, Minnesota, Walter Doty, Jr. of Oskaloosa and Delbert Doty of Tres Pinos, California and many other family members and friends.
