Helen Agnes Harvey was born January 12, 1912 in Marion County, Iowa the daughter of Leonard Edd Carter and Belle (Everhart) Carter.

She was raised on a farm near Melcher-Dallas. Helen worked on the farm with her parents and later worked for the Orchard Corn Plant in Monroe. She did housework for many families, including 20 years for Pete Bybee. Prior to retirement, Helen was a cook for the Knoxville School System.

On December 31, 1930 she was united in marriage to Smith Edward “Bill” Harvey in Perry, Iowa. The couple lived in Otley for 14 years, where their two sons, Jerry Dean and Robert L. were born. The family later moved to Knoxville, and resided there for more than 50 years.

Over the years, Bill delivered bulk oil products to farmers, worked in a local coal mine and retired from the Marion County Road Department as a foreman with 40 years of service.

Helen was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church, having joined on December 31, 1950.

In her spare time, she enjoyed ceramics and made beautiful quilts for family and friends.

She passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at the West Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the age 97 years, 2 months and 26 days.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, S.E. “Bill” and her sister, Maude Rankin.

Those left to honor her memory include two sons: Jerry (Margie Andrews) of Pleasantville and Robert (Carole) of Colorado Springs, CO, 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.
