He was raised in Milford and graduated from Milford High School. Lewis enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. He was aboard the USS Utah the day Pearl Harbor was attacked. Lewis worked as a Water Patrolman in Storm Lake from 1950-51. He was then called back into service during the Korean War, because of his specialized Seal training. Lewis received many awards and accomendations throughout his 12 years of service in the United States Navy.

He returned home from Korea and from 1953-1961 he served as a Park Officer in numerous State Parks in Iowa. He and Lois then moved to Pleasantville where Lewis was the Water Superintendent of Lakes and Rivers until his retirement in 1981.

Lewis was very active in the Pleasantville community; he served two terms as Mayor, served on the city council, and was the past Commander and Treasurer of the American Legion. He was also selected as Grand Marshall for July 4th festivities. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports, NASCAR, mushroom hunting and spending time with his family and friends.
