Darrell Dean Saffell was born October 28, 1928 in Weldon, Iowa the son of Allen Mathias Saffell and Loretta Marinda Jane (Keller) Saffell.

He was raised in the Le Roy, Iowa area and graduated from Le Roy High School at the age of 16. Following high school, Darrell served eight years in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

On December 27, 1952 he was united in marriage to Shirley Ione Kline. The couple lived in Des Moines until moving to Beech 40 years ago. Darrell was a master mechanic and machinist and worked for Solar Aircraft and then Firestone, from which he retired in 1981.

Following Shirley’s death in 1997, Darrell went back to work as a security guard until 2005. In his spare time, Darrell loved spending time with his family, especially the grand and great-grandchildren. He was also an avid fan of the Knoxville Raceway.

Darrell passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Mercy Capitol, in Des Moines, at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 17 days.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley and his siblings: Marvin, Madge, Harold, Roberta and Virginia.

He is survived by his son, Allen Saffell of Pleasantville; 4 grandchildren: Mathew Allen, David Eugene, Samantha Josephine, and Stephanie Jolene; 3 great-grandchildren, Chance, Jonathon and Janelle; two special daughters, Vickie Lee Smith of Des Moines and Heather Lee Talbot of Milo; sister Lila of Bakersfield, California and many other family members and friends.

Darrell has been cremated and a graveside service, with military honors, will be held in the Pleasantville Cemetery at a later date.
