Virgil Wayne Roorda
March 20, 1940 ~ June 10, 2025 (age 85)Virgil Wayne Roorda, 85, of Barnes City, passed peacefully on June 10, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Barnes City United Methodist Church, the Barnes City American Legion Post 145, or the ALS Association may be left or mailed to the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.
Virgil, the son of John and Anna Mae (DeWinter) Roorda, was born on March 20, 1940, in Oskaloosa, the 11th of 15 siblings. He grew up in the Montezuma area and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1958. Virgil then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1959 to 1961, stationed in Germany. After his discharge, he returned to Montezuma and worked in construction and carpentry. Soon after he became an over the road truck driver with a career spanning nearly 60 years and over six million miles.
On June 2, 2007, Virgil was united in marriage with Rosanne Tinkle Lindenman. Together their family consisted of seven children: Rusty, Sheila, Tim, Andy, Tricia, Jeff, and Shelly. Virgil enjoyed tractor rides, tinkering in his shop, drinking coffee with a sweet treat, reading and watching Westerns. He was a fan of watching sports, NASCAR, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Virgil was a member of the Barnes City American Legion Post 507 and had served on the Barnes City City Council for six years.
Virgil was survived by his wife, Rosy Roorda; children, Rusty (Val) Lindenman, Sheila (John) Stump, Tim Lindenman, Andy Lindenman, Tricia (Mark) Thomason, Jeff (Madeliene) Roorda, and Shelly (Scott) Anderson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, Patricia Davis, Elmer (Delaine) Roorda, Sharon (Frank) Fowler, Penny Mason, Lyle (Judy) Roorda, and Bruce (Judi) Roorda; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Harlan Roorda, Joyce Stone, Barb Foster, Loren Roorda, Marvin Roorda, Marilyn Cook, Norman Roorda, and Marge Clayton.
