Juddie F. Vandevender, 84, of rural Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, July 31, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. His funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, Jim Striegel officiating. Graveside services and burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Masonic Cemetery in Spickard, Mo., with Daryl Barnard officiating. Visiting hours with the family at 6-8 p.m. today at Bates Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to Share Iowa.
Juddie Vandevender was born April 2, 1917, in Spickard, Mo., to Leslie and Sarah Young Vandevender. On June 8, 1940, he married Virginia Clemens in Spickard. She died Dec. 24, 1971. On March 31, 1973, he married Velda Dutemple. She died April 14, 1985. Early in his life he was a milk hauler around Spickard. He moved to New Mexico where he managed a chicken ranch at Belview for a couple years. He then moved back to Spickard and was a meat cutter at the locker plant there for many years. In 1964 he moved to Iowa and worked at Kaiser Fertilizer in Keswick, and then as a meat cutter at the locker plant in Keswick, and finally as at [sic] meat cutter at the What Cheer Grocery Store before retiring in 1982. On Nov. 28, 1987, he married Bettey Barnard in Oskaloosa. In retirement, he was a volunteer driver for Mahaska County Human Services; helped with the Share Iowa food program; and volunteered at the Agency on Aging in Oskaloosa. He was a member of the Spickard (Mo.) Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Betty Barnard of Oskaloosa; a daughter and son-in-law: Linda Gerard and Melvin Simpson of Victor; two sons and daugthers-in-law: Ferrell and Janice Vandevender of Spickard, Mo., and Larry L. and Linda Vandevender of What Cheer; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a stepson and hiw wife, Daryl and Tami Barnard of Des Moines; a stepdaugther, Judy Barnard of Pella; two step-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law: Ada and Hudson Meighen of Spickard, Mo.
Besides his first two wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard; and a sister, Lorraine. (Oskaloosa Herald, no date)
