Willard Overton,77, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with military honors by Harry L. Anderson Post No. 34 of the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cremation will follow the service; burial will be at Leon Cemetery in Leon at a later date. Visiting hours begin 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral chapel, with family present 6:30-8 p.m. Friday. Memorials: Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa.
Willard was born March 29, 1924, in Pleasanton in Decatur County to Harrison and Nona Putnam Overton. He attended school there until the family moved to Leon, where he graduated high school in 1943. He married Irma Scott in 1943, and enlisted in the United States Navy that summer. He spent 22 months on the Admiralty Islands in the Pacific during World War II. He was discharged in December 1945, and spent several months in the Veterans Hospital for a service-related disability. The family then moved to Leon, where he was county treasurer for 10 years. They moved to Oskalosoa in 1959; he worked for Pamco as an accountant and purchasing agent for 17 years. From 1975 until their retirement in 1987, he and Irma owned and operated The Carousel, a children's clothing store on the Oskaloosa square. Willard was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He also volunteered for the YMCA's Y's Men selling Christmas trees.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Irma Overton of Oskaloosa; a daughter and son-in-law: Carole and James Chadwick of Littleton, Colo.; three sons and daughters-in-law: Jeff and Myrna Overton of Haverhill, Joe and Beth Overton of Oskaloosa and David and Cindy Overton of Atlanta, Texas; 10 grandchildren: Aric and Tim Strah, Jamey, Jordon and Johnathan Overton, Ian, Lindsay and Taylor Overton, and Morgan and Tyler Overton; two sisters: Dora Cofer of Loomis, Calif., and Helen Bohnenkamp of Manchester; and two brothers and sister-in-law: Lloyd and Marilyn Overton of Leon, and Harold and Colleen Overton of Blue Earth, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Evelyn ?Hreffler and to brothers-in-law. (The Oskaloosa Herald, no date).
