Winterset Man Dies in Crash

Robert K. Gordinier, 28, of Winterset was killed early this Tuesday morning when the car he was driving went out of control on Highway 92, just north of Winterset.

The accident occurred about 1:45 a.m. at the foot of the hill just east of the highway Y. Gordinier was alone in the car, and was east bound.

Indications are that the car was going at high speed as it came out of the curve onto the straight-away east, where the road drops down the hill. Where the road becomes straight east, the car started to skid broadside down the road, plunged into the ditch on the north side of the highway, flipped as it traveled about 40 feet in the air, and landed on its wheels.

Parts of the car were strewn over an area of 100 feet. Gordinier’s body was not found until after a lengthy search of the area. It was 90 fee north of the spot the car came to rest.

Robert Kenneth Gordinier was born in Des Moines July 9, 1939, a son of John and Helen Lockard Gordinier. He had lived in Madison county the last three years, and was employed as an attendant at Tyer’s Standard Service station in Winterset.

He had served in the US armed forces, and was a member of the Glen Echo Christian church in Des Moines.

Mr. Gordinier was married to Kathryn Kuhns of Winterset on Jan. 21, 1961. She survives him.

He also leaves a son, Bryan; his father, John K. Gordinier of Des Moines; his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Taylor of Des Moines; two brothers, Darrell Gordinier of Des Moines and Larry Gordinier of Collegeville, Tex.; a step-brother, Cecil Taylor of Corpus Christi, Tex.; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Gordinier and Leo Lockard of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. J. Kent Bogaard of Des Moines. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
