Thomas Stevens, of Scott township died at the home place January 23rd, 1890. The deceased was born August 4, 1813 in Harrison county, Ind.; was married to Amelia Grant August 22, 1832. They moved in 1836 to McDonough county, Ill., and then to Henry county, Ia., in 1840: thence to Madison county, Ia., in 1855.
His companion died October 1st, 1867; his children soon married and moved away, leaving him alone, and for the greater part of some twenty years all alone. Who else could have endured such a ---- life?
His weakness lasted only six days. his suffering was great, but he endured it without a murmur.
Uncle Tommy, as everybody called him, was one of the most honorable and respected citizens of Scott township, a loving father and a great favorite with all his grandchildren. He leaves three sons and a daughter to mourn the loss of a kind father. The remains were laid to rest in the King cemetery.
Coordinator note: In lieu of an obituary for Amelia (Grant) Stevens, we offer this of her husband. WPA gravestone records (1938) spell her name as Emmalia. Early cemetery censuses (walkings) document that the stone once said "Aged 52y 6m 4d"
