August 5, 1954 – June 13, 2024

On June 13, 2024, our Earthly world lost a beautiful soul, Dennis Paul Hastie, age 69. Dennis was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on August 5, 1954 to Paul Laverne Hastie and Maxine Mae Hastie. When Denny P (as he was known to his friends and family) was nine, the family moved from the farm to Earlham, Iowa, and he graduated from Earlham Community High School in 1972. Denny was the middle of three boys. “Brothers Three,” he referred to them, and stories of growing up always brought laughter. Denny was currently residing in Durango, Colorado, in the summers and Wickenburg, Arizona in the winters.

Denny attended University of Iowa, but then found his calling (he would say I ran out of money) and began a lifelong career in electrical power, in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Arizona. He began as an Apprentice and then a Journeyman Lineman for LE Meyers. Denny would always say, “Firefighters dreamed of being as tough as Lineman!” He quickly moved “up the ladder”. He was a General Substation Technician for Interstate Power Company Systems, a Systems Operator IPC, and a Lead Construction Specialist Supervisor for Alliant Energy. Denny retired (and in layman terms completed his last “get up”) from Arizona Public Service (APS) in 2014 as a New Construction Inspector.

Denny P is survived by his wife, Juliann Campbell-Hastie; daughter Reanna (Aaron) Bratholt, son Levi (Trisha) Mead; beloved grandchildren Kalon, Aidynn, Madison, Lane, Shay, and Rhett; brothers Bill (Kathy) Hastie, Michael (Michelle) Hastie; nieces Stephenie, Stacey, Becky, Lisa and Monica, and so, so many friends and family scattered all over the United States.

Denny P was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years Marjorie Hastie (d. 2012), by his parents Paul and Maxine Hastie, and his sister-in-law, Kathy Hastie.

To his wife Juliann, he was the passionate and playful love of her life. When they married in 2014, he vowed to make her laugh every day. He wrote her hundreds of poems, and doggone it, he was funny! Denny said he was blessed to marry into a ready-made family. One of his biggest thrills was holding his three grandsons when they were born. He so adored his grandchildren, but sometimes he just had to put himself in timeout when they wouldn’t listen to him!

Denny was an avid mule man and he loved riding, partying, and meeting people from all over the country. He didn’t know a stranger. Denny was one of the first founders of the Iowa Stag Riders and was President of the Arizona Mule and Donkey Association. He also rode with the Bill Williams Mountain Men and the Wickenburg Desert Stags. Denny’s poem, “A Muleman’s Ride to Heaven” was published in Mules and More Magazine.

Denny P loved sitting by a campfire, and if you listen closely, you can hear him holler “more wood!” He could entertain us all with his quick wit, his infectious smile, and if you were lucky, a song or two. He loved to sing, even though he told us he really was shy! His current favorite song which he recorded for us was “Where I Find God” by Larry Fleet. He always had a big hug (he’s a hugger) and an encouraging word for anyone!

Denny’s annual gift to all his friends and family was a Christmas poem that included a heartfelt message, humor, and faith. His Christmas poems were truly special and will be treasured. Most important of all, Denny P was a Christian. Denny’s strong faith was evident in everything he did, and it shone brightly through his ornery grin.

Denny’s Celebration of Life will be held on March 21, 2025 in Wickenburg, Arizona. It will be a time to laugh with a favorite story (or two) and share his passion for life. Denny P leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family and friends who were always entertained by his quick wit and hilarious sense of humor. In the end, what he did was make our world brighter.
