Dorothy Lee Marckmann, 88, of St. Charles, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at Vintage Hills Care Center in Indianola.
Dorothy was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on January 12, 1936, to Karl and Eleanor Stuempfle. She was baptized on April 5, 1936 by Reverend Henry M. Strub at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Williamsport and confirmed on April 10, 1949. She graduated from Williamsport High School on June 5, 1953.
In 1956, she married George Mowen and moved to Iowa. To this union were three children, David, Corinne, and Christine. The marriage ended in 1977. She met Ivan Marckmann and they married on Leap Day, February 29, 1984. The fun of 4-year anniversaries and parties over the years were some of the best memories they cherished, after tearing up the dance floor from all that polka.
Dorothy retired from ADT Security and was very active in her church and all her life with quilters, altar guild and the hospitality committee. She also served as a Girl Scout neighborhood leader. Dorothy had an amazing garden and grew all kinds of vegetables and flowers and had a cherry tree that produced the best cherries for the most delicious pie on the planet according to her grandsons. They donated tons of pumpkins and gourds over the years to Winterset for various festivals each fall. Dorothy also loved animals and had numerous cats, dogs, and farm animals over the years exhibiting her kindness and gentle soul. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling to Branson and also seeing her favorite artist, Andy Williams.
She is survived by her husband, Ivan; her sister, Ann (John) Russ; sister-in-law, Judy Stuempfle; her children, David (Cindy) Mowen, Corinne Nelson, and Christine Mowen; grandchildren, Jennifer (Lewis) Moore, Ryan (Brooke) McCauley, Cole (Kelli) McCauley, and Karlee Nelson; and 7 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Ivan’s children, Sherri Marckmann and Brenda (John) Fickes; grandchildren, Shelby (Tony) Orr and JD (Amanda) Fickes; daughter-in-law, Teresa Marckmann; and 5 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Karl and Eleanor Stuempfle; brother, Bill Stuempfle; grandson, Matthew Mowen; sons-in-law, Andy Nelson and Doug McCauley; and Ivan’s sons, Roger Marckmann and Dennis Marckmann; and daughter-in-law, Mary Marckmann.
The family would like to thank Suncrest Hospice and Vintage Hills Care Center in Indianola for the kind and loving care she received while battling the dreaded disease of dementia.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 9, 2024 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset. Burial will be in the Fontanelle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family to be designated to organizations special to Dorothy.
