Charles Ezra Deets Jr., 62, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at the Urbandale Healthcare Center after lengthy illnesses, surrounded by his loving family. He was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Charles was born in Iowa City, Iowa on November 8, 1961 to Charles and Evelyn Deets; the eldest son of six children. He went by many nicknames, such as Charlie, Chuck, or even Charles in Charge. He spent his formative years at Glenwood where those he grew up around, became a part of his family. After leaving Glenwood, he moved to Des Moines and resided at Urbandale Healthcare Center until his passing.

Charles never let his disability define him or stop him from doing anything he loved. When he was a part of the Special Olympics, he played football, ran track, and even played soccer. Charles enjoyed spending time with his loved ones and friends. He loved cracking jokes, superheroes, and above all else, football. He was always eager to share his knowledge of the sport and his enthusiasm. This man knew his sports. Charles was good with numbers, whether it be dates or sports numbers.

Charles is survived by his sisters, Diane (Howard) Robinson, Linda (Gary) Howell, and Sandra (Marty) Kephart; his brothers, Christopher (Amy) Deets and Gerald (Traci) Deets; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was proceeded in death by his parents; his grandparents; a half-brother; a nephew; and other close family and friends.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Sunday, July 28, 2024, at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, July 29, at the funeral home. (Wearing your favorite sports attire is requested.) Burial will follow in the King Cemetery, Madison County.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Special Olympics that Charles felt strongly about or to the Urbandale Healthcare Center. The family would like to give their appreciation to the Urbandale Healthcare Center to the residents and staff for all the love and support they provided.
