Forty Years Ago (July 22, 1882)

On Monday morning, the 24th, the citizens of Winterset were shocked with the news that Mrs. Jane Lothrop, wife of Col. Lothrop, had died at 3 o’clock that morning. The news was more startling because Mrs. Lothrop, who had been stricken with paralysis on the 15th of last November, had been feeling better of late and the day before had attended church and her friends were hoping that she was on the road to recovery.
