Shirley Dudney, 90, of Afton, died Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at her home in Afton. Celebration of Life Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Rev. Denise Dudney and Rev. Jim Morris will officiate. Private burial will be at the Lorimor Cemetery in Lorimor at a later date. Visitation with family receiving friends from 10 to 11 a.m. service time Wednesday at Powers Funeral Home in Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be kindly made in Shirley’s name. Shirley Beth (Simons) Dudney, daughter of Charles C. Simons and Edith M. (Partridge) Simons, was born on July 24, 1933, in Iowa City, Iowa. She graduated from Lorimor High School in 1951.
On July 30, 1952, she married Owen Dudney and they lived and worked in Winterset where Shirley was employed at the Union State Bank as a bookkeeper. To this union three children were born, a girl, Shellie, and two boys, Douglas and Kenton. In 1959, they moved to a farm northeast of Afton where they lived for 36 years. In July of 1965, she started working for the East Union schools as the superintendent’s secretary, where she saw many changes over the thirty years she worked.
Shirley was a former member of the United Methodist Church of Lorimor.She is survived by her husband, Owen Dudney of Afton; a daughter, Shellie Hansen of Creston; her two sons, Douglas (Denise) Dudney of Milton, Fla. and Kent (Julie) Dudney of Weldon; eight grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; and many other extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Edith Simons; two brothers, Paul Antrim and Bill Antrim; five sisters, Dorothy (Chuck) Woods, Marian (Jim Janss), Pauline (Wilbur Hammar), Mona (Richard Hammans), and Dixie Loy; and a granddaughter, Nicki Morales.
