Linda Forbes of Petersburg, Illinois, deemed one of PORTA’S finest by many of her former students, died on September 25, 2023, at Memorial Hospital in Springfield as a result of a hemorrhagic stroke. The legendary Ms. Forbes began her teaching career in Missouri, but soon after transferred to PORTA where she remained until her retirement in 2003. Most every seventh grade student for more than thirty years studied social studies (including the Constitution) under her tutelage.

Linda was born in Winterset, Iowa, in 1943. The family later moved to Missouri where Linda attended School of the Ozarks for both high school and junior college and graduated from Southwest Missouri State. She later earned a graduate degree in history from Sangamon State University. Linda was an active member of numerous organizations including IEA, NEA, Masonic Eastern Star, Petersburg Garden Club where she served as an officer, and the Petersburg Library, where she served on the board. Linda was a member of the Hollister Presbyterian Church in Hollister, Missouri. Additionally, she was a pilot who earned private and instrumental ratings.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents Warner and Mabel (Rogers) Forbes, brother Robert W. Forbes, nephew Mike Forbes, and niece Vicky Forbes Burns. She is survived by brother James Forbes in Iowa, sister-in-law Helen (Robert) Forbes in Missouri, niece Joni Forbes Schuler (Gary), nephews Jeff (Gena) Forbes, Robert (Marian) Forbes, Tom (Tiffany) Forbes, nieces Lisa (Brian) Hollis, and Rhonda Bader plus many great nieces and great nephews. Additionally, she has many friends who mourn her passing.

Private family interment will be in Winterset, Iowa, on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Memorials may be made to the PORTA Foundation, the Petersburg Garden Club, or the Petersburg Library, and sent to Hurley Funeral Home at 122 West Douglas Street, Petersburg, Illinois, 62675. Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg is assisting the family with arrangements.
