Rodney Lemon of Winterset, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, February 20th, 2024 at the age of 57 years. He was a beloved son, father, brother, uncle and friend. He had a kind and generous spirit and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Rodney grew up in Van Meter, Iowa. He loved and excelled in sports. He and the neighborhood kids played baseball creating a mini-field in the lot next to his childhood home. Most of Rodney and Rhonda’s allowance of 25 cents per week went towards paying off broken windows from batting into the neighbor’s home.
Rodney was a friend to all and was elected Homecoming King at Van Meter High School. He went on to have college scholarships for both baseball and football but ultimately chose baseball. Some may remember the football game where Rodney blocked a field goal kick with his chest and he had the lace football imprint for days!
Rodney loved being an active member of the community while managing the Gold Star (a lounge, bowling center and video store) for many years. Rodney was an amazing bowler who nearly made a 300 but just missed it and his average was 240. In his later years, Rodney managed the Dollar General Store in Winterset.
Rodney’s real pride and joy were his three children. Rodney had two sons and a daughter whom he dearly loved. In the children’s younger years, Rodney coached the boys in T-ball and his daughter in softball. He also taught his kids how to bowl. One of his favorite pastimes was dirt track racing with stock cars being his favorite. It was incredible watching Rodney race his #25 hobby stock around the track. He continued to travel to Boone and other Iowa tracks to watch races mostly with his sons, Chris, Zachary and other good friends. Another favorite pastime were lunch dates with his daughter, Heather; daddy daughter dates were one of his favorite things.
He is survived by his sons, Christopher and Zachary (Alayna) Lemon, his daughter, Heather Lemon, his father, Donald Lemon and his sister, Rhonda Pierce. Rodney was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Lemon.
A service to celebrate and remember Rodney’s life will be held on Saturday, February 24th, 2024 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Winterset, Iowa with a visitation from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. The funeral service will start at 1:00 pm followed by a short graveside service at the Van Meter Cemetery off of Richland Road.
Immediately following the graveside service there will be a luncheon at the Van Meter American Legion Post #403 until 5:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can made to the Rodney Lemon Benefit Account with Union State Bank.
