FLYER MISSING FOR OVER A YEAR
Lost on Patrol Flight over Philippines to Coast of Borneo

Lieut. (j.g.) Deane Martin, Naval air corps, of Winterset, who had been missing in action in the Pacific since last March, was officially placed on the death casualty list last week.

The notice came in a letter from Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, received here last Thursday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Martin, of Winterset.

Lieutenant Martin was serving as pilot on land-based patrol bomber in the Philippines. According to information in the letter, the plane in which he was flying, left its base in Tacloban, Leyte, on March 12, 1945, on a routine sector search to the northeast coast of Borneo. All efforts to contact the plane by radio after it left the base were unsuccessful. When the plane was overdue, search flights were sent, but no trace of it was found.

The letter also continued: “In view of the strong probability that the plane in which your son was flying crashed, and that he lost his life as a result thereof, because no official or unconfirmed reports have been received that he survived or appeared in any (unreadable) personnel liberated from Japanese prisoners war camps, and in view of the length of time that has elapsed since he was reported to be missing in action, I am reluctantly forced to the conclusion that he is deceased.”

Lieutenant Martin was a well-known and popular young man of this community. He was 26 years old at the time of his death. Born north of Patterson, he moved to Winterset with his parents as a small boy and graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1938.

While attending high school here, he was an outstanding athlete, playing on the football team for several years. He attended the State University of Iowa in Iowa City for two and one-half years, before being called to active duty in the Naval Air corps on Sept.1, 1942.

He was married in October, 1943 to Miss Dolores Booth of Des Moines. He is survived by his wife of Des Moines, his parents of Winterset, a sister, Mrs. James Rummel of Des Moines, and a brother, Dyle of Winterset.
