Dies In California

Lieutenant General Robert O. Bare, a native of Winterset, died last month in California. He was 79 years of age.

He was one of the highest ranking officers in the history of the United States Marine Corps.

Following graduation from Winterset High School, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Anapolis, graduating from there in 1924.

He served in Cuba, China and the Philippines before World War II. He was a military adviser on the invasion of Europe and was with the First Marine Division when Okinawa was invaded.

He also served with the Division in Korea.

Prior to retirement in 1957, he served as commander of the First Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

His retirement years were spent at Carmel Valley and Salinas in California. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth.
