James H. Wood died at his home in Nichols April 18, 1899. He was born in Marion, Grant county, Indiana, January 14, 1855. At the age four years he moved with his parents to the old home on South Prairie, where he grew to manhood. Hillie, as he was familiarly known, was one of our most estimable and upright characters, loved and respected by all who knew him. After completing a course at the Iowa City academy he spent his early manhood teaching school.

At the age of 23 years he was united in marriage to Ida A. Norris of Conesville, Iowa and from this union there were six children, five of whom are left with the bereaved wife to mourn their loss. Little Glening has gone before. The first few years of his married life was spent in farming near his birthplace. He then moved his family to York, Neb., where they spent 13 very happy years. During that time he united with the First Presbyterian church at that place.

In 1895 they returned to Nichols, Iowa, where he was stricken down five weeks ago with paralysis from which he never recovered. He leaves an aged father and one sister, Mrs. Charles Heath. The family have the sympathy of the entire community. The funeral was conducted by the Woodman lodge, of which he was a member. Sermon was preached by Rev. Keyser of Keswick. Interment at the South Prairie cemetery.
