On Friday afternoon, January 27, 1899, occurred the death of little Maudie Tomlinson, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Tomlinson of this place. She was born in Roshville, Nebraska, October 7, 1888. Several years ago her parents removed to Columbus Junction, Iowa, which has since been her home.

About six weeks ago, she suffered from an attack of diphtheria and this disease seemed to leave her system very much disordered. She suffered from kidney trouble and at the last her throat was paralyzed. She had not been very well for the past year and her parents realized that her health was failing and had taken medical advise in regard to her, but she did not grow stronger. Maude was fully conscious to the very last, and knew that she must go. She told her mother how she wished to be dressed for burial and with wonderful calmness she bade a most affectionate farewell to her dear ones telling them not to grieve, and passed quietly and sweetly to the home beyond. The funeral was held from the Reformed church on Sunday afternoon, conducted by pastor, Rev. Fouse.

Interment was at the Columbus City cemetery, the pall bearer being Lester May, Will Paschal, Will Pence and Paul Lischer.
