Was born in Union county, Indian, August 15, 1844. He died in Columbus Junction, December 15, 1898. Only a little over fifty-four years of age at the time of his death. He was the youngest son of John and Mary Flood Hetvield and with them came to Iowa in April, 1848. He has lived in the same vicinity ever since more than fifty years.

On November 29, 1876, he was married to Margaret McCarney, who, with four children, two sons and two daughters, survive him. These are, in the order of their ages, Lois, John, Maud and Bennie F.

Mr. Hetfield was a good man and an excellent citizen. If he had enemies among his neighbors, we never met one of them. He was honest in his dealings and prompt to meet his promises. He loved his home and was devoted to his family. It was his delight to be with them. With them he was kind, loving and indulgent. His death came swift and unexpected, but he died peacefully. His last words were "I am easy Peace Peace." The funeral, which was a large one, the neighbors testifying by their presence to their respect for the dead, was held from his home, December 16. It was conducted by the Rev. W. S. Kight. His remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Columbus City.
