James Manley was born in Cecil county, Maryland, February 18, 1808, and died October 17, 1898, aged 90 years, 7 months and ? days. When a child his parents moved to Stubenvill, Ohio, where he passed his youth and early manhood and learned the carpenter's trade. At the age of 24 he went to Wheeling, West Virginia. He was married June 17, 1833 to Miss Mary Ann Mayhew. To them were given seven children, five boys and two girls. Of these one son and one daughter are now living to care and comfort the aged widow that now survives.

Mr. Manley and wife united with the Christian church in Wheeling, West Virginia, under the preaching of John Henry of the Western Reserve in Ohio a few years subsequent to their marriage. He first came to Iowa and to this place in 1845. At the end of nine months they returned to Wheeling. But in 1849 they came back to Iowa again and located on the place where he lived with his family 49 years. During all these years Father Manley was a steadfast attender and supporter of the Christian church until within a year or two when ? and other infirmities made it nearly of quite impossible for him to attend.

Mr. Manley was strictly a temperance man, industrious, active, energetic and saving of his earnings. In this respect he set a worthy example to young men. He was disposed to be accurate and just in all his dealing and strictly honest. He was kind and generous to the poor and needy if he thought them worthy of ?. He was plain, frank and outspoken in his intercourse with men and made himself understood. For a man of limited advantages he was a man well informed in the affairs and history of the world and had a good knowledge of the bible and of business matters which qualified him for useful service in any capacity in which he was called to rest. The funeral services were held from the christian church in Columbus City yesterday afternoon, Rev. L. R. Ames of Des Moines had charge. The remains were laid away in the cemetery at the city.
