J. A. Hildebrand, 92, Civil War Veteran, Former Assessor, Dead
J. A. Hildebrand, 92, a veteran of the Civil war, formerly city and county assessor for many years, died at his home, 1726 Third avenue SE, at 2:30 a.m. Monday. He had been in ill health since July 5.
Born in Baden-Baden, Germany, July 5, 1844, he came to Niles, Mich., with his parents at the age of 3. They resided there when the Civil war began and Mr. Hildebrand enlisted in the Fifteenth Michigan infantry early in 1862. He was discharged in October 1864, because of injuries suffered at the siege of Vicksburg. He re-enlisted, however, in the Thirtieth Michigan infantry and served until the close of the war, taking part in several engagements.
Following is discharge he came to Marion in 1866 and for two years worked in the drug store of Ristine and Palmer. In 1868 he came to Cedar Rapids and started a lumber business which he continued until 1880 when he retired because of the loss of his left hand in a hunting accident in western Iowa. He was assessor until 1915.
His wife died seven years ago. Surviving are two sons: B. C. and E. W. Hildebrand, both of Cedar rapids; a granddaughter, Mrs. Lucille West and a great-granddaughter, Darlene West, of Hollywood.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal church, Cedar Rapids lodge No. 141 I.O.O.F.; Foresters of America, Court Cedar; Star of West, K. P.; and T. Z. Cook post, G.A.R.
Funeral services will be held in the Beatty chapel Wednesday at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. (Source: The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, IA, Mon, Aug 24, 1936, pg. 1)
