Harriet S. Gibson, 1372 8th ave., Marion, passed away at 2:10 p.m. Saturday Nov. 7, at a Cedar Rapids hospital following a long illness.
The daughter of J.K. and Maria Smith Gibson she was born Feb. 25, 1882 at Marion. A graduate of Marion high school with the class of 1900, she attended Iowa Teachers college. She taught in the Marion schools until 1918 when she went to Washington, D.C. where she was employed as a statistician in the U.S. department of agriculture.
Retiring in 1948, she returned to Marion in 1949 to make her home with her sister the late Mrs. J.W. Bowman. While teaching in Marion, she traveled four summers with the Redpath-Vauter Chautauqua as a play supervisor and cashier.
Miss Gibson was a member of the First Methodist church of Marion, a charter member of Chapter K.J. of P.E.O., a charter member of Sorosis club and a member of Ameigo club.
Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Franklin (Louise) Corrick, Topeka, Kansas, and three nephews: Gibson Putnam, Ottumwa, George Putnam, Ponitac, Michigan and James Putnam, Emporia, Kansas.
Memorial services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the Murdoch chapel, Marion, by the Rev. Ralph E. Baker, pastor of the First Methodist church. Interment was in Oak Shade cemetery.
