I may be wrong here as the 1900 David Crane in Poweshiek Co., IA "may" still be in the running. Got to look at all angles.
Even though none of the children for Roswell Crane are the same living with David as his siblings, the ones in the database were pre 1847 births and who knows if complete? The siblings living with David in 1900 (says he was born August 1844) were brother Ira (April 1869), Effie (Dec 1860), and Edith (April 1872). Possibly these children were the result of the step-mother Anna Sutton born May 1830 or simply later births. But then we get back to the Ohio birth place and being married 28 years (could both be an error).
The Carroll newphew looks like Guy Carroll, born June 1870 in Nebraska!
David's August 1844 birth would fit nicely between Alice (March 1843) and Marcia's (April 1846) births and even could be 1845 instead of 1844 or even 1834. Seen so many census years off by one or even 10. Yet, again, the 1860-1880 census leads us to believe that he was born much earlier, around 1835 and fits better for his Civil War participation. I would still try and get the obits for Roswell and Perlina.
