I sent a direct message to you saying I found a probate listing for Martha J. Crane (no date given)in Story County, Iowa and the twins who both died 1880 there. You'll need to get a volunteer to look that up for you there.
You also said that in following a particular widow Helen Crane (second wife of David) South Dakota in 1910 to Nebraska in 1920 and with a Hall family, I decided to look further into Roswell Crane seen in Anamosa as possibly David's father?
Along the way we see Roy Crane listed which is most likely LeRoy Albert Crane. He married a Carrie Hall in 1865. He is a son of Roswell R. Crane (1806-1888) and Perlina Newman (1806-1903). In one database it lists their children as Maria (1829), Helen (1831), Martha (1833), Emily (1835), Orville (1838), LeRoy (1840), Alice (1843), and Marcia (1846).
Now, the 1900 census says that David Crane was born August 1844 and living with brother Ira and sisters Effie and Edith... none of these listed above so not same family. Also the one shown in 1900 census says he was born OH as well as his parents. I would disregard this David as being yours.
In the 1860 census it says David was born c.1836 but the 1870 census eludes to his birth c.1832 and then the 1880 brings him back to c.1835. Wonder if he falls somewhere between Emily and Orville above?
You never mentioned what year David died when finding him in Nebraska? Was it before 1900?
I also found David listed in the Civil War serving Co. F, 24th Iowa Infantry which was formed in Linn County.
The 1880 census shows Martha "Mattie" and Sarah (twins) with father D.D. Crain but again, wife Martha is not shown but says he is 'married'. Suspect she must have died at or around the time the census was taken?
What I also see interesting is a David Day Crane married to Hannah Cleveland - who had grandchildren named after him. One was born 1835 in NY but died the next year. Wonder if any connection?
I guess you are at a point in obtaining his military records, an obituary if you know his death date, or his death certificate in Nebraska. Even obits for Roswell and/or Perlina above to see what naes are mentioned if for nothing else, process of elimination. Roswell died May 25, 1888 and Perlina died March 1, 1903, both buried at Riverside Cemetery.
