I so agree with you about family "cover-ups" and such. I am going on information handwritten by my grandmother in 1939. I have traced Mable Woodworth Gale and she is the first wife. I have a copy of the marriage cert. of Katie Kelsey and John Nelson Gale for 1891..they married in NH and then went back to Iowa! Mable died in 1890. From information in John Gale's military pension file, John later deserts Katie and runs off with another woman. Katie spends the rest of her life(she dies in Los Angeles in 1939) trying to obtain half of John's pension as a deserted wife! His file is huge and consists mainly of her letters to the pension board stating how John abandoned her in Kansas City around 1911. He takes off with another woman who claims she is his wife when he dies in a veteran's hospital in Norfolk, VA in 1926. He is buried in the National Cemetery there. All this time, my aunt, who died last year at age 97 insisted to me that her grandfather(John Gale) left the family to join the Spanish American War. Ha! what a joke he perpetrated on them...he never served a day in that war...he did spend one year in the army in Montana fighting Indians in 1880...thus he got a pension. I never disabused my elderly aunt about her grandfather thinking it was of no use to spoil her memory at this late date. What a cad.
