Pauline, going by you post on other web sites, I have come up with this probable conclusion.
Your John Newton Gale (born 1848 Bath, NH) was married to Katie M. Kelsey (born 1860 Polk Co., IA). They had children Bernice L. born c.1884 Kansas and Albert R. born c.1886 Kansas. This family shows up in the 1895 Anamosa census.
Keep in mind that census sometimes are incorrect and even the people questioned have some varients from one census to another about their birth year and place especially if near the Canadian border. John said he was born New York in the 1895 census.
I found a John Gale, born March 1848 Canada, widowed, living in Willow Twp., Cherokee Co., IA during the 1900 census. No children with him.
If Bernice was born c.1884, by 1900 she would have been 16 and probably married as I don't see her under Bernice anywhere. Maybe she went by her middle name later on?
I found an Albert Gale, born June 1885 (age 15) working as a servant in the Walter and Lulu Ramsey household in Twp 2N 38-Range E, Bingham Co., Idaho.
Could be that Katie died and John sent the children elsewhere? Only speculative but also the only Gale's I have found in 1900 that could match yours.
Jim
