There is a probate file in Jones Co., IA, for Thompson Bell. It is O561.
I have copied two pages from this large file that I think prove that the bible record is accurate. I will be glad to mail them to you, if you give me your postal address-directly to my email address.
Also on the Bowens Prairie lot is:
Olive Welch d 4/30/18_6-dau. of Thompson Bell
Nicholas Bell's stone shows 6/24/1836. I do not know if this is a birth or death date. It is very early for Jones Co.Admins. for T. Bell estate:
Barney B Bell and Barrett WhittemoreOn the Probate Summary, his wife is listed as Nancy. Surviving Heirs are: Barney B Bell residing in Calif.(bet. 30 & 40), Almira Riggs residing in MN(bet 25 & 30),Susan Cook residing in Delaware Co., IA (about 25), John Bell residing in Calif. (about 24), Emma Josephine Bell residing in Independence, Buchanan Co., IA (5 yrs Old). Said last named being a grandaughter of the deceased and only surviving heir of Murry Bell, Deceased
The other page I copied is dated 9/28/1865:
To the County Court of Jones Co:
The undersigned on behalf of the heirs of Thompson Bell, dec'd, late of said county, object to the appointment of Sarah Bell, widow of said deceased for the following reasons to wit:
1st that she has no interest in the estate of said deceased having released all her interest prior to the marriage with said deceased.
2nd that she is of too great age to transact the business of the estate. Signed by: S P Cook, Hopkinton, IAI ask to be appointed administrator of said estate above named. dated 10/04/1865 and signed by S P Cook.
I thought you might like a copy of S P Cook's signature.
Thompson Bell married Nancy Collins in 1858. I do not know where S P Cook came up with Sarah. Perhaps that is part of the reason he was not appointed adminstrator....
