I have seen this name while doing research and like you said, seems to be unique to Iowa and no where else. Obviously a phonetic mispelling once they moved. I did find your query at CousinConnect.com and another by someone else in 2002 that may give a clue? The ask:
" I am looking for the DRUCKENBROD OR DRUKENBROD FAMILIES of LANCASTER COUNTY, PA and STARK COUNTY, OH. Any information on this surname will be greatly appriciated. "
Doing an Ellis Island search (1892-1924) didn't come up with anything for Drumbarger but offered a few alternatives. The top ones were (and none that end with 'ager'):
Dronberger
Brumberger
Bromberger
Brunberger
BronbergerAlso, if you simply drop the first letter, there are a lot of RUMBARGER people in the US. Maybe the D was an immigrant's first or middle initial and/or was copied from a document and the person doing so thought there was a 'D' in front of it?
Just some food for thought.
