In Response To: John McManus (Pattie Reber)

Looking at the LDS files online, there is a Patrick McManus born March 10, 1836 in Ballintubber, Roscommon, Ireland, and died October 28, 1911 at Boone, Boone Co., IA. Married Mary McGrath May 13, 1867 in Clinton, Clinton Co., IA. His parents were Patrick McManus and Mary Lynch. Unfortunately this file doesn't mention much about his brother John but only a son named John Edward McManus (1871-1923). The elder John is said to have died in Anamosa. [Ancestry Pedigree file by Michael J. Kearney of Clinton, IA also on Rootsweb.com site]

The WPA files for Jones county doesn't show him but do see some people with the spelling McMannas.

Also see a John McManis born c.1831 Ireland, widowed saloon keeper living in Farley, Dubuque Co., IA. This is not too far away and during the 1880 census, but none in Boone or Jones counties during that year.

One more file shows a Patrcck McManus (1808-1885), died in either Monticello (Jones) or Cascade (Dubuque), IA and buried in St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery, Cascade. The listing says the family moved from Ireland in 1840. Shows him married to an Amanda Wiser but by the dates the children were born, was a second marriage for him about 1855 in Iowa. This would make finding John in Farley (Dubuque Co.) more realistic.

Do you think that your John lived past 1920? I ask because that census will list the date/year when the family migrated to America. Can get someone to look it up for you. Also check the Cascade cemetaries in case he is buried in a family plot of some sort?

Eric
