Brian,
Very interesting! My gr gr grandfather Erastus Winchell,, whom I believe to be a brother to this Alvin that married Malinda Pate, was also in the civil War of 1861. Enlisted Sept 25, 1861 also Company F, 12th Iowa regiment serving under General W.H Wallace.He was enlisted as 5th sargeant. Erastus was however captured and taken prisoner for nearly 8 months at the battle of Shiloh, missing in battle April 6,1862.Discharged Dec 1, 1862. He was ruptured in service for which he drew a pension, and died due to the injury in Oct 1885 in Argonia, Sumner Kansas.
