I am including this obit, because it may explain some of the confusion
Monticello Express: March 2, 1950, p6: death of Gerd J Dirks on Feb 22, 1950. funeral Feb 25 at Goettsch Funeral home & then at Wayne Zion church with burial in family plot at Wayne Zion. he was born Jan 10, 1863 at Wiesederfehn, county of Wittmund, East Friesland, Germany, s/o Harm Jansen Dirks & wife--Henericka Brock Dirks; married Johanna Maria Schellstadt of Upshort; 3 children: Harm J Dirks & John E Dirks were born in Wiesederfehn, (John Emil died infancy), & Ed Henry born Wayne twp in 1893; they left Germany Feb 13, 1893 to Wayne twp; wife died Sept 27, 1938, Gerd then lived with son Harm in Scotch Grove;
brother, Diedrich Dirks of Amber & sister Sophia Juergens of Germany are dec'd. survived by son Harm, 4 grandchildren & 8 great grandchildren.

above are in 1925 census on Jones Co site.
