Hazel Koranda (1915-1996)

Funeral services for Hazel V. Koranda, 80, Parker, S.D. and formerly of Oxford Junction, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 17, 1996 at the Oxford Junction United Methodist church, with the Rev. Todd Chelf officiating. Burial will be in the Mayflower cemetery in Oxford Junction.

Mrs. Koranda died Jan. 13 at the Hilltop Home in Parker, S.D., following a lingering illness.

The daughter of Sidney and Hedwig Meier Sennett, she was born Sept. 20, 1915 in Ellendale, Minn. She graduated from Wheatland high school in 1934 and then attended beauty school in Ft. Dodge. She married Emile Koranda Sept. 15, 1945 in Toronto.

The couple lived their entire lives together in Oxford Junction, where they operated the Koranda Standard Service Station for over 40 years. She also served as the librarian at Wriege library in Oxford Junction for over 20 years.

Emile Koranda died in 1988 and Hazel moved to Jefferson City, Mo. in 1989. She moved to Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1992 and for the past 2 1/2 years she lived at the care center in Parker, S.D.

She was a longtime member of the Oxford Junction United Methodist church, where she spent many years teaching Sunday school. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary Wapsie Unit No. 473 in Oxford Junction and she served as a 4-H leader for the Oxford Junction Happy Hustlers. She enjoyed reading and sewing.

Mrs. Koranda is survived by a daughter, Marianne (Mrs. Tom) Thies, Jefferson City, Mo.; a son, Paul, Salt Lake City, Utah; and 2 granddaughters, Tara and Rhonda Thies, Jefferson City, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant son Jay, and her brother, Dick Sennett.
