Grace Beranek (1907-1995)

Funeral services for Grace E. Beranek, 88, Lost Nation, were held Aug. 29 at the United Methodist church in Oxford Junction, with the Rev. Todd Chelf officiating. Pallbearers were Tim Beranek, Gene Hamdorf, Dean Hamdorf, Jan Bartels, Dean Ruley, Jay Weiland and Darren Beranek. Burial was in the Mayflower cemetery, Oxford Junction.

Mrs. Beranek died Aug. 26 at the Wheatland Manor Care Center.

The daughter of Otto and Matilda Pavlista Groth, she was born July 23, 1907 near Olin. Her father died in 1911 and a year after her mother remarried. She was adopted by her stepfather, Joseph Shedeck, Jr., when she was 5 years old. She attended the Burr Oak Country School.

She married Louis Beranek March 1, 1927 in Davenport. They lived in Oxford Junction for a short time and purchased a farm in 1930. Mr. Beranek died in 1948. She lived on the farm until 1985 and then moved to Lost Nation. She moved to Wheatland Manor in January 1994.

Mrs. Beranek was a member of the United Methodist church in Oxford Junction, a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Homemakers' Club.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Doreen (Mrs. Robert) Hamdorf, Lowden; and Gloria (Mrs. Quentin) Hoyer, Oxford Junction; 2 sons, Darrell Beranek, Oxford Junction and Steven Beranek, Lost Nation; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, a great-grandson, a brother and a half-sister.
