Raymond Benischek 1917-1993

Funeral services for Raymond A. Benischek, 76, were held at Sacred Heart Catholic church, Oxford Junction, March 20, 1993 with Father William Holzer officiating. Burial was in Mayflower cemetery, Oxford Junction. Mr. Benischek died at the Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa, March 17.

The son of Albert and Tillie Tatak Benischek, he was born near Oxford Junction Feb. 16, 1917, attended country school in Clinton county, and as a young man, farmed with his parents. He married LaVon Schoaff at Sacred Heart church Sept. 23, 1939. The couple farmed northeast of Oxford Junction and he serviced Rite-Way dairy equipment and sold Lynk's Seed Corn. They moved to Oxford Junction in 1958 where he continued his business operations.

In 1969 he and Mrs. Benischek began the Ra Von True Value Hardware Store in Oxford Junction and he did plumbing, electrical, refrigeration and LP gas service. They retired in 1986.

He was involved with the Oxford Junction Senior Citizens Center, assisting his wife with congregate meals. In April, 1977, he received an award for the 12 pound, 3 ounce pike he caught in the Wapsie river.

He was a life-long member of Sacred Heart church, a 50 year member of ZCBJ Lodge, Oxford Junction, was Sharon township Farm Bureau president, served on the Oxford Junction City Council and was first secretary of the Oxford Junction school PTO.

He is survived by his wife, 3 daughters, Vonnie Rae (Mrs. William) Werden, Cedar Rapids; Joan (Mrs. Steve) Barth, Robbins and Patricia (Mrs. Karl) Dona, Lost Nation; 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Otto, Oxford Junction; Paul, Anamosa and Stanley, Davenport; 4 sisters, Elsie Shaw, Maquoketa; Rita Chapel, Boulder, Colo.; Pauline Ball, Bella Vista, Ark. and Marlene Werden, Winona, Minn. He was preceded in death by a brother and grandson.
