Funeral services for Margaret Downing, 91, Anamosa, were held July 14, 1992 at the First United Church of Christ, with burial in the Riverside cemetery.

Mrs. Downing died July 12 at her daughter-in-law's home.

The daughter of John and Esther Ann Reade McDonald, she was born Dec. 1, 1900. She attended Pine Grove country schools, Center Junction high school and graduated from Monticello high school in 1917. She also attended UNI and Coe College.

She married Lee Arnold Downing July 10, 1924 and they operated Tyler-Downing Grocery Store in Anamosa. Mr. Downing died in 1961.

She taught school in Tipton, Oxford Junction, Mt. Vernon, Mechanicsville and Lantana, Fla. She was a housemother at Cornell College from 1964 to 1967.

Mrs. Downing was a member of the United Church of Christ and served as a teacher and superintendent for 20 years. She was a charter member of Cornelian Club and 2nd district chairman of Junior Federated Clubs. She was a member of the Fortnightly Study Club, since 1932; worked with Cub Scouts and Bluebirds and was adviser for the Athenian Club. She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, O.E.S., Jones County Republican Women, the Historical Society, Majel Club and Mayflower Plymouth Circle.

She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Anne Ketelsen, Anamosa; a sister, Elizabeth Glick, Aurora, Colo.; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, L. A. "Buddy" Downing; 5 brothers, 2 sisters and one grandson.
