Bellevue Leader, Bellevue, Iowa, January 24, 1877Accidental Shooting
James Smith, a farmer residing in the vicinity of Cascade, on Sunday afternoon was taking his rifle down from the wall when the hammer caught against the rack in which it hung, discharging the contents. His wife happened to be seated near with her back turned towards him, and the ball entered just below her right shoulder, passing through the right lung and lodging in the body.
The attending physician thinks that there is very little hope of recovery of Mrs. Smith. She has seven children.
