Memorial services for Edward Francis Rate, 96, a lifelong Iowa City resident and Cedar county property owner, will be held at a later date, with burial in the Oakland cemetery. The body has been cremated.

Mr. Rate died Nov. 25 in Detroit, Mich, of natural causes.

The son of Henry Hall and Calista Tranter Rate, he was born Jan. 28, 1898 in Iowa City. He graduated from Iowa City high school. He entered the University of Iowa in 1918, but World War I temporarily closed the university. He joined the U.S. Army and was later assigned as an officer in Knoxville, Tenn. He returned to the university after the war and received his law degree in 1921.

He married Maude Adams on July 20, 1928 at Lake Okoboji. She died in May 1993.

Mr. Rate was a member of the Quarterback Club and supported the Iowa Hawkeyes through verse.

He also owned and operated a farm on the Cedar River between Sutliff and Cedar Bluff, where he fed beef cattle. He practiced law in Iowa City until he was 90.

Mr. Rate is survived by 2 sons, Henry A., Gardiner, Mont. and John E., Homer, Alaska; 2 daughters, Mary Swanson, West Bloomfield, Mich. and Julie Perkins, Belmont, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
