Dr. Ernest Theodore Pascarella, 79 of Iowa City passed away at Mercy Hospital on January 23, 2024.

In keeping with Ernest’s commitment to further education at the University of Iowa, he chose to donate his body to the Deeded Body Program at Carver College of Medicine where it will be studied by medical students over the next several months. Ernest was born to Louis and Ruth (Redmond) Pascarella on February 12, 1944, in Erie, Pennsylvania. After graduating from East High School in Erie, Pennsylvania, Ernest studied and played football at Princeton University (Class of 1965). Ernest received the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts during the Vietnam War when he served as a platoon leader, rifle-company commander, and first lieutenant with the First Marine Division. Upon return, he pursued a Masters from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 and a Doctorate in Higher Education from Syracuse University in 1973.

Ernest married Diana True in New York in 1969. He had 3 children to whom he was a devoted and loving father. They raised their family in Oak Park, IL, while Ernest was a professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Ernest moved to Iowa City in 1997 and held the distinguished Mary Louise Petersen Chair in Higher Education until he retired in 2020. Ernest had a profound impact through his extensive academic contributions to higher education and as the co-author to the book, “How College Affects Students,” co-authored with his dear friend and colleague Patrick Terenzini. He is one of the most cited scholars in higher education research and his work has been cited in 5 U.S. Supreme Court cases.

Ernest had a great love for reading books, rowing on his rowing machine, and following Iowa Hawkeye athletics.

Ernest is survived by his children Andy, Allison and Emily, his sister Julie Karsznia, and his grandchildren, Isabella, Zoe, Eliana, Teagen, Cinder, Joey and Louie. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Ruth Pascarella.
