Lisa Kay Sturtz, 66, of North Liberty, IA, passed away after her courageous battle with cancer on Friday, December 15, 2023 at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, IA.
A remembrance gathering will be held in the spring at The Kirkwood Room (515 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the UIHC Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
Lisa was born on October 4, 1957 in Parkston, SD, the daughter of Kenneth Elmer and Delphine May (Baumiller) Juhnke. She graduated from Parkston High School, before attending Dakota State University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health information management. Lisa was united in marriage to David W. Sturtz on September 15,1990 in North Liberty.
Lisa was a selfless, kind, loving friend to so many. Taking care of her family was everything to her. Lisa’s calming presence, genuine heart, and uplifting smile was comforting to all.
Lisa held numerous positions at the University of Iowa Hospital, most recently in the trauma registry department after many years in the joint office of compliance. Over her 40-year career, she built many close relationships with her co-workers. She was admired for her compassion and undeniable work ethic. Even when the task seemed too large, she was up for the challenge.
A devoted mother and grandmother, she enjoyed following her kids’ and grandkids’ athletic endeavors, rarely missing their games. She was an avid Hawkeye and professional sports fan. She really enjoyed watching her favorite teams on TV and attending games in person. She was also known for her love of sewing. Her specialty of creating personalized t-shirt blankets meant so much to her friends and family.
Lisa is survived by her three children, Chad (Iilene) Smith of Mazomanie, WI and grandsons Leo and Arlo; Brianna Sturtz of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Shane Sturtz of Durham, NC; two sisters, Mona (Dan) Koupal of Mitchell, SD, and Theresa (Buzz) Stiner of Milford, KS; and many extended family members.
Lisa was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, David, who passed away in 2018.
