Sue Ann Welden, 82, of Iowa Falls passed away under the care of Hospice at The Bird House in Iowa City, IA, on November 25 after a long-fought battle with breast cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Sue was born April 27, 1941 in Mattoon, Illinois to Parker and Carolyn Petersen. She grew up in Cedar Falls, IA, graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1959 and received a BA in Education from the University of Northern Iowa.

Sue was united in marriage to Loren Cranston. They had three children and later divorced. In 1982 she met Jerry Welden. Sue married Jerry on May 7, 1983, in Cedar Falls, IA.

She was the mother of 3 children, Michael (Kristin) Cranston of Eugene, OR; Jennifer (Michael) Hummel of Coralville, IA; and Kathleen McFadden. She was grandmother to Jack Maschka and Sam Maschka.

Sue was also the stepmother to Wayne (Stephanie) Welden of Fort Collins, CO; Ricke (Julie) Welden of Norwalk, IA; Ruth (Don) Kloetzer of Geneva, IA; Todd (Cam) Welden of Pawley’s Island, SC; Chris Welden of Iowa Falls, IA; Sue (Doug) Minard of Austin, TX, Anne (Mike) Wiarda of Ackley, IA; and Katie (Doug) Haverkamp of Iowa Falls. IA. She had 16 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She loved her stepchildren as her own.

For many years she owned and operated Maggie’s Youth Shop in Cedar Falls and Price’s Sporting Goods in Iowa Falls. She also was employed as a recruiter for Ellsworth Community College. She was a member of Isabella Society, Etude Club and the Red Hats.

Sue was an accomplished watercolorist and in her spare time enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, working with flowers and spending time with her grandchildren.

Sue was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls and the Friends of the Calkins Nature Area. She participated in many Habitat for Humanity projects- locally, nationally and internationally.

She was known to be a great hostess in her homes and at the lake. No matter how many guests, Sue entertained effortlessly. Sue is remembered as a wonderfully supportive friend. There was nothing she would not do for those she loved. She was also known to be a great conversationalist and for being very witty.

Upon retirement, Sue and Jerry divided their time between Iowa and their vacation home in Marco Island, Florida.

Sue was proceeded in death by her daughter, Kathleen McFadden in 2004, stepson Todd Welden in 2013 and husband Jerry Welden in 2016.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Bird House of Iowa City, Iowa City Hospice, Jerry and Sue Welden Endowed Scholarship Fund benefitting nontraditional and low-income students, Calkins Nature Center, or a charity of your choice.
