John Joseph Hotz, 80, of Iowa City passed away at University of Iowa Hospital on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.

A celebration of John’s life will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 11:00 AM at High Point City Church (4187 Landon Ave SW, Iowa City, IA 52240). Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to High Point City Church.

John Joseph Hotz was born to Elmer Joseph and Martha (Vostrel) Hotz on May 2, 1943, in Lone Tree, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm in Lone Tree and after high school started farming full time.

John married Angela Doll on March 31, 1983, in Robbins, Iowa.

In addition to farming, John was a lab assistant at the University of Iowa for 35 years, retiring in 2010. He lived and worked on the farm until June 2009.

John loved farming, deer hunting, fishing, gardening, and cracking black walnuts. In later years, John spent much of his time watching favorite shows on television.

John was engaged in his community and across his life gave time and energy to the Future Farmers of America and his faith community, Hight Point City Church.

John will be best remembered as a quiet thinker, a caring Christian, and a deeply thankful man.

John is survived by his wife Angela Hotz; children James (Christina) Heitman, Jeff (Karen) Hotz, John Hotz, and Lorianna Hotz; grandchildren Kelsey, Andrew, and William; and great-grandchildren Maddie and Mason.

John was preceded in death by his parents.
