Catharine Z. Lutherman Kollros May 31, 1917 to September 17, 2004. Catharine and her twin sister Margaret were born on May 31, 1917 in High Bridge, New Jersey, to Mary and Charles Lutherman.

A Memorial Service with be held at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, on Saturday September 25th, 2004 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow at the funeral home.

Her family moved to Illinois in the late 1920s, first to Chicago Heights and then to Chicago. She graduated near the top of her class at Parker High School in 1934, continuing in college work for the next two years at the related campus. She then earned a competitive scholarship at the University of Chicago in 1936, and was awarded the degree of B.S. in Zoology in 1938. The Zoology Department employed her as both a teaching assistant and as a research assistant until she received her Ph. D. degree in Zoology in 1944. Her thesis work was concerned with competition between two species of flour beetles.

On September 19, 1942 she married Jerry J. Kollros. They came to Iowa City in September of 1946 and she was appointed as Instructor in Zoology, in charge of the laboratory work in the introductory Zoology courses.

At the University of Chicago she had earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa and in Sigma Xi, a scientific society. She joined the local chapters at the University of Iowa. She joined the American Association of University Women, and held several offices in the local chapter, and as a member of its French group.

Aside from her University associations, she became a member of the Craft Guild, and was especially active also in work for the United Church Campus Ministry’s Day Care Centers. She was a talented quilter, producing quilts for her family, and being active in a group of women who produced quilts which were donated for sale to Good Will Industries.

Her sons James and Peter war born in 1949 and 1953. Catharine served as a den mother when they joined Cub Scouts.

She and her Husband Jerry moved from their Melrose Court home to the Oaknoll Retirement Residence in July, 2000. She died on September 17, 2004 after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. Survived by her husband, her two sons, a daughter in law, Barbara Konkle Kollros, two grandchildren, Daniel and Catharine Marie, and by an older sister, Ruth Sparks.
