Hilton E. “Red” Matthess, 86, of Iowa City, died Thursday, August 19, 2004 in Mercy Hospital after a long illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m Saturday, August 21, 2004, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with Deacon Jerry Miller officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Williamsburg. Friends may call from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to Hilton “Red” Matthess Memorial Fund.

Red was born August 31, 1917 in Muscatine, Iowa to Kenneth L. and Lurla (Whalen) Matthess. He married Margaret Wickham on December 28, 1962. He was a carpenter and painter for 40 years. Red enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool, football games and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Peg, a son Dave (Jan) Andrews of Marion, two grandchildren, David and Kevin, two brothers, Kenneth Matthess of Andalusia, IL, Walter Matthess of Laurence, TN, one sister, Arlene Bringham of Worchester, MA.

He is proceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
